I Don’t Need a Reversing Aid… I already know how to Reverse !!!

I Don’t Need a Reversing Aid… I already know how to Reverse !!!

Wouldn’t you be more embarrassed knocking down a utilities post and incurring a $1,600.00 bill??

This happened to a guy next to me in a caravan park and he had a spotter...…..I bet he wished he had a ReverseMate!!!!

Very often, when talking to Caravan, RV and Boat owners, I get a comment like the title of this Post… Everyone “Claims” to know how to reverse and most aren’t game to admit that they are bad at reversing.

Everyone can Learn how to Reverse correctly with a bit of practice, but most of us don’t get to practice very much, so by the time we do need to reverse we are under pressure from our travelling partner to get parked. Worst of all are the Onlookers in the caravan parks with their refreshments in hand, just waiting for you to make a mess reversing your RV.

There is No Need to be Embarrassed by using the ReverseMate !!!

Having owned large trucks and reversing them, this was a different ball game, but when it came to reversing my RV into a caravan site using my reversing camera this did not help me when lining up the blindside so I could be parked beside the awning pad. I started to get embarrassed when the onlookers with their refreshments in hand and with smirks on their faces watched as I was reversing in and out trying to get my RV in the right position, even though I had a reversing camera it didn’t help.

As a result of travelling in Australia and visiting many caravan parks, I decided there must be a easier and safe method to assist me when reversing into a site in a short time, so I sat down with a pen and paper and drew something that I could use when reversing by using my driver’s side mirror and not needing a spotter as depicted in the video.

RV Secrets: Reversing Parking with the ReverseMate

RV Secrets: Reversing Parking with the ReverseMate

Reverse parking is not as terrifying as you might think.

Even if you are a casual RV owner, you might not be comfortable driving a large vehicle. This won’t be a problem most of the time. Even the most inexperienced can coax these gentle giants along with a little bit of caution and a ReverseMate.  To ensure your RV is able to be parked wherever you are, you will need to be comfortable reversing. Although it may seem daunting to perform these maneuvers in an RV, once you learn the tricks of RV reverse parking with the ReverseMate, you will soon be able to park your RV anywhere you want.

Keys to reversing an RV

  • It is a good idea to evaluate a space before you drive in. If you are unable to reverse your RV into the space.
  • You should make sure all curtains are securely closed in your RV. Visibility is crucial for successful reversing. Make sure nothing blocks your vision.
  • It may be necessary to get out of your RV in order to inspect the space behind you. This is especially important if you are reversing out from a space. Although it may seem like a hassle, it can help prevent some extremely unfortunate and unneeded accidents from ever occurring.
  • You can also make a spotter for a passenger if you are travelling together. This method is more efficient than using reversing cameras. You must be able to see the spotter through your mirrors. If you lose sight of them, you should stop until they are found. It is also helpful to be able to hear and understand their hand signals. Coordinate beforehand to ensure that there are no communication problems.
  • Don’t get too caught up in the rear of your vehicle, especially if the RV is being swung around to fit into a spot.
  • You can swing around in a circle and then reverse into a park by making a wide turn. This will allow you to get into a more straight backing position.
  • Be sure to check for tree branches and other obstacles that could cause obstructions when you reverse.
  • A three-point turn is a good idea, but don’t be afraid to try ten points when you start out. As long as you get the right angle at the end, a three-point turn might be the best.

All these tips can help you master reversing, but practice is the only way to get better. This means that you will need to make excuses for yourself to travel on more RV adventures to “make sure you have the technique down”.
